Online Training Programme

Project North East – Leadership and Management online programme 2012 – 2014

In March 2012, the Foundation and Project North East (PNE) piloted an online strategic planning course. Following the success of the first course, the Foundation asked PNE to develop and deliver a leadership and management Northern Rock Foundation Online Training Programme. Courses will run until mid 2014 and cover:

  • Strategic Planning
  • Leadership and Teambuilding
  • Performance Management and Reporting
  • Developing a Fundraising Strategy
  • Project Management

An Introduction to Strategic Planning (February & March 2012). This course is now fully booked.

The aim of this course is to help you think about the direction of your organisation and encourage you to plan, without stifling your imagination and opportunism. This course will help you to:

  • Create a mission and vision statement
  • Set strategic objectives
  • Understand and conduct a PESTLE and SWOT analysis
  • Understand what is involved in the strategic planning process
  • Implement your strategy
  • Review and learn from your implemented strategy

Leadership and Teambuilding (March & June 2013). This course is now fully booked.

This course will help you to:

  • Understand the difference between leadership and management
  • Recognise the relationship between strategic management and leadership
  • Understand the role of the leader in developing the vision and objectives of an organisation
  • Evaluate the role of the leader in creating a strong team
  • Describe how personal energy, self-belief and commitment can impact on leadership styles
  • Analyse different styles/models/strategies of leadership and evaluate them in line with their own experiences and practices
  • Recognise the impact of their organisation’s culture and values on strategic leadership and vice versa
  • Reflect on the impact of legal, regulatory and ethical requirements on strategic leadership
  • Understand the key theories and models of teambuilding and their practical application in the workplace
  • Know how to develop trust within a team and empower people to help in achieving the organisation’s aims and objectives
  • Select and successfully apply a range of different methods for motivating, supporting and encouraging team members and recognising their achievements.
  • Understand how effective and ineffective teambuilding can impact on an organisation’s practice

Performance Management and Reporting (May & December 2013)

This course will help you to:

  • Develop systems for collecting and assessing information on the overall performance of the organisation
  • Develop a range of benchmarking techniques
  • Understand the relationship between performance management, outcomes monitoring and impact assessment
  • Identify the key success criteria for organisational improvement
  • Identify and analyse a range of impact measurement tools
  • Understand and apply a range of tools and techniques to set and evaluate team performance targets
  • Understand the benefits of setting SMART objectives and planned outcomes
  • Recognise the importance of monitoring and evaluation of performance
  • Understand how to embed an organisational culture of improving performance and customer focus

Developing a Fundraising Strategy (June & September 2013) This course is now fully booked.

This course will help you to:

  • Compose a clear description of aims, outcomes and unique selling points
  • Identify the specific outputs and outcomes of their organisation’s projects and programmes
  • Understand the range of terminology used in the fundraising process
  • Understand and effectively identify their organisation’s full overheads and project costs
  • Understand the range of finance and funding options for their organisation
  • List and produce a range of documents that will be required by funders and financers
  • Compile a Fundraising Strategy for their organisation

Project Management (October 2013 & February 2014)

This course will help you to:

  • Understand the key characteristics of a project and the different tasks involved at each stage
  • Understand the project life cycle, from conception to commissioning or handover
  • Assess where the project fits in with operational management activities
  • Outline the tools a project manager will typically utilise
  • Secure, schedule and manage resources effectively
  • Communicate effectively with all project stakeholders
  • Identify and mitigate risks
  • Develop a monitoring and reviewing strategy for the project that assesses impact and achievements
  • Carry out an evaluation of the project
