Appplications under £15,000 Appplications over £15,000

The information on this website has been provided to give you a clear idea of the kind of applications we can support and those that we cannot. It will help you understand how best to apply, how decisions are made and why we cannot help all those who ask. It will smooth the path to a successful application. It will save wasting your time on an application which cannot be accepted.

Please read the guidelines carefully before you fill in the application and we will both save time, money and disappointment.

General information
Grants may be made for limited capital, core or project funding and for varying periods of time.

We prefer to receive typed or word-processed applications. It is possible, by special arrangement, for groups to apply on tape or video. If there is anything else we can do to help disadvantaged groups to apply please tell us.

Support from other funders helps to establish confidence in your project and to make the Northern Rock Foundation’s grant go further.

The Foundation operates independently of Northern Rock plc. Please do not ask employees or Board members of Northern Rock plc, or the Trustees of the Foundation individually, to support your application.

Re-applications
If your application is turned down you should not reapply for the same purpose unless your rejection letter explicitly tells you that you can and under what circumstances.

You should not normally have more than one grant under any one programme from the Foundation at a time.

We are occasionally able to continue funding work we have supported previously, but such instances are rare. You should have a plan for how to continue your work (if it is necessary to do so) after our grant ends, and not assume we will offer further funding. However, if you want to apply to extend core or project funding from us, you should discuss the matter with your programme manager before your current grant expires. If you want to make a new application under the same programme, but for a different project, you should still speak to your programme manager before applying.

The Foundation wants to help as many people as possible over its life. We also want to make sure our grants have a long-term impact. That means that we cannot give grants that benefit everyone equally all the time. We have made some choices for the next period of our grant-making. If your group or project does not fit into our current priorities please do not apply to us. There are many other grant-makers and, thanks to the way in which we are funded by Northern Rock plc, we will be here for a long time. Your turn will come.

Filling in the application form
You need not type in your answers but please fill in the form legibly. Proper completion of the form speeds things up and saves us time and money – which might mean enough for an extra grant.
The organisation section is about the organisation that is applying.

A Contact name: this should be the person who wrote the application and can answer questions about it.

B Project name: only fill this in if your project has a separate name i.e. not the same as the organisation’s.

C Previous applications: have you previously applied to the Foundation for a grant? If the answer is ‘yes’ please quote the application number which can be found on previous correspondence from the Foundation.

D Deadlines: your organisation may be working to deadlines that we need to know about. These may be, for example, deadlines from other funders, or because a project may run out of money at a known date. Please let us know what the deadline is and describe the reason for it.

E Specify which programme: do not tick more than one. It will not help.

F Amount requested: put in the total for which you are asking, e.g. if you want £30,000 per year for 3 years write ‘£90,000 over 3 years’ in the box.

G How soon could you start: write what you honestly believe to be the case. We understand that the date may be changed later.

H Local authority: please specify which cities, counties, districts or boroughs will most benefit from your work. Check the map under 'Who'.

I Signature: the person who signs the application must be the Chairperson or Treasurer of the organisation applying for a grant.

Finally, please ensure that you have completed the application by filling in the checklist on your application form.
