A better, stronger
voluntary sector – making the sector more capable of helping
itself and others, articulating its needs and fighting its corner.
We believe that to be effective
the sector needs a stable base
to support it, and enough capacity within organisations so they can
deliver work to their full potential. Sometimes voluntary organisations
need outside advice or help, sometimes training, or sometimes ways
of coming together to share ideas, exchange good practice and work
jointly on a problem.
We are particularly interested in:
• umbrella groups like Councils for Voluntary Service that
enable smaller organisations to develop and thrive;
• networks and forums that help organisations working in the
same field pool their expertise and have a bigger collective impact;
• training that helps organisations improve their governance
and management;
• improving policies and practices to support volunteering;
• developing and promoting quality standards for individual organisations
and the sector as a whole.
We will also use the Better Sector programme to support other training
initiatives of our own making or suggested by others.
We will not accept applications for community development work
under the Better Sector programme – grants to umbrella groups
and networks must be to support services to other organisations,
not to individuals.
