Christmas comes early to charities in the North East and Cumbria.
Northern Rock Foundation’s Trustees have awarded almost £2 million in their Christmas grants round.
Penny Wilkinson, the Foundation’s Chief Executive said when announcing the most recent round of awards:
“There are lots of people who provide care to members of their families and their relatives – there are other people who volunteer their time to help others in crisis. The Foundation has always recognised the great contribution they make to the lives of others in the North East. At Christmas time especially they deserve our recognition.”
Some of the grants awarded include:
- £124,226 to Durham and Chester-le-Street Carers Support to help it to provide practical support to over 1,500 carers in County Durham.
- £100,675 to Carers Together in Redcar and Cleveland to fund their work with carers in the more isolated communities of East Cleveland.
- £90,000 to Nightstop Teesside which provides emergency accommodation for homeless young people.
Other grants made by the Foundation include an award of £70,000 to the National Autistic Society to help to provide a befriending scheme for families with children with Autism and an award of £96,015 to Barnard Castle YMCA to support one-to-one work with some of the more disadvantaged young people living in and around this rural community.
The Foundation has made grants totalling over £11 million in 2009.

Notes to editors
Northern Rock Foundation is a charity and company limited by guarantee with an independent Board of Trustees that makes all decisions on governance, finance and policy. The Foundation aims to tackle disadvantage and improve quality of life in North East England and Cumbria. To do this, it invests money, time and expertise in charitable activities using several tools including grants, loans, training, research and demonstration projects. The Foundation’s work is delivered by a professional staff team of 12 based in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Foundation was established when Northern Rock demutualised in 1997. Up to December 2007, the bank gave, by covenant, 5% of its annual pre-tax profits to the Foundation, totalling more than £190 million. The Foundation will receive a minimum of £15m a year in 2008, 2009 and 2010 from Northern Rock, as part of the arrangement under which the bank was taken into temporary public ownership. Maintaining this arrangement is a condition of any sale of the bank in that period. The Government has asked the bank’s board to identify a viable long-term future for the Foundation.
