Tackling cruelty towards people with learning disabilities living in the community seminar 16th January 2013

This is a free seminar presented by Lemos&Crane and supported by Northern Rock Foundation

Date: 16 January 2013
Time: 2pm – 4.30pm
Venue: Life Conference and Banqueting, Times Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4EP

People with learning disabilities living independently in the community experience a disturbing range of harassment, abuse and related crime with alarming frequency. The loneliness of some people with learning disabilities is putting them at particular risk of cruelty.

You are invited to attend a free seminar for practitioners based in the North East of England that will present findings from Loneliness and Cruelty, new research conducted by Lemos&Crane working with practitioners across the country. It sets out a dynamic new framework for understanding the experiences of people with learning disabilities and how local policy and practice needs to respond in terms of:

  • Enhanced social networks for people with learning disabilities – friendships and relationships, self-esteem and confidence, person-centred interests
  • Stronger prevention and support from mainstream services – staff training, encouraging reporting, multi-agency working
  • Creating civic mindedness and safer public spaces – working with schools, restorative approaches, safer shopping areas and public transport.

The seminar will also feature an opportunity to take part in round-table discussions with other practitioners representing a range of sectors including housing, care and support, police and voluntary organisations.

To apply for a place please email alexb@lemosandcrane.co.uk outlining why you’d like to attend.
